As he slowly came too he saw the artificial light from the deep tunnels was gone and the only illumination was the colourful glow of the various other passenger’s augments and the city he was aiming for. \\ Sitting up to stretch his artificial arm, flexing his fingers still not completely used to the sight of his mistakes. - | It didn’t take an Android to figure out this was probably the 10,000th email that had been sent out on that day alone, Robert saw the bait and took it. Sure enough an ominous mechanic was down the next day to replace his lost arm, leg and eye as well as add some extra things. When Robert asked all he got was \\ “Company policy kid, bit late to turn down now.” \\ | + | It didn’t take an Android to figure out this was probably the 10,000th email that had been sent out on that day alone, Robert saw the bait and took it. He unplugged and put his equipment away looking down at his arm. It was nice augment gear. Nothing top of the line but it didn’t have any crude bits hanging off it like bolts or loose wires so no way to snag on clothes. He remembers getting some lady attention at his local bar first time walking in with the upgrade. Robert couldn’t help but think this was a positive fresh start but something tugging at his mind making sure not to get his hopes up. | He unplugged and put his equipment away looking down at his arm. - | The City was getting close now, only a few minutes away. Robert patted himself down making sure he had everything before grabbing his bad and pulling it close. A small amount of excitement mixed with fear started to well up, He took this job because without it, it would surely have meant death or scrapped. He saw the other passengers doing like him and getting ready. The train wasn’t full but far from empty. Room enough to sleep at least. \\ the dark night sky like a blanket with no stars out tonight. Probably from all the light pollution given off by the city. Robert started to see buildings fly by the windows before they dived back into another tunnel and heading down lower. - | After everything had calmed down Robert got a better look and the woman. Much like her ride she seemed quite augmented herself. For starters she had a tail, it seemed to be g00p Tech, cybernetic liquid that is fed into the body to do any number of things. The tail was simply a stylised container containing the g00p that was neon red in colour. It was obviously hooked to her nervous system as it moved life like. g00p veins spread across her body. Next we’re her hands seemed to be some sort of power gloves, large and stylised again to be paw shaped, Robert was starting to see a trend making him cringe a bit, he had seen many people follow the trend of splicing animals and people together and they were always super weird. \\ | + | After everything had calmed down Robert got a better look and the woman. + | “Wait! Hold up!” Robert called out seeing the red head getting ready to leave. His voice caught her attention as she turned to face him, a less than impressed look crossing her face. As he approached, he could feel her judging eyes travel over him. \\ “And you are?” \\ “M My name is Robert, I came for the job, Uh, With Slider industries. I got the message ad signed the contract a few weeks ago. Was meant to start today and I noticed the sign you had” The redhead raised and eyebrow with hands on her hips ready to draw her weapon. \\ “Funny, that other guy was Robert too, came for the job although I’m pretty sure he had a different job in mind.” She looked him over a bit longer. “You got your holo on ya? Show me your profile.” \\ “uh yea sure, gimme a sec.” Robert pulled his bag around and rummaged through it, fumbling his search a bit feeling nervous and pressured. He brought out his Holo and got his profile on screen. “T there, it’s me.” The woman snatched the holo from Robert’s grasp, scrolling through it as she paced around a bit. \\ “Yep everything checks out...So why didn’t you come straight to me? Why’d you let some gap poser come in your stead?” \\ “I...Uhh I didn’t know I was getting a pick up. Nothing in the message said anything about a ride.” \\ The woman sighed shaking her head, "
| |||
| “You like it huh?” The redhead chimed in to his fanning. \\ “It’s amazing and so well done, I never saw anything half as good as this back home. \\ She laughed “Well I am glad someone is as much as a fan as I am... My name is Delta by the way and this is my boy Remi.” Delta started up the car as the roar of the engine shook the frame. Both Robert and Delta looked at each other with big grins. “Ah, that never gets old, now seat belts on.” Delta fiddled with some dials on the dash. “Hey Remi, how are the roads looking tonight.” \\ A robotic voice coming from the car answered. “Seems the main roads are quite clear however there is an accident on the east side of the spine and reports of data riders have been received a few hours ago.” \\ Robert in awe “You even have AI installed, How did you afford that? \\ Delta smirked. “It’s a well paying job Robert.” Delta stomped on the accelerator roaring the engine as she slapped the stick into gear, letting the breaks loose as she pulled the wheel forcing the car into a Smokey U-Turn. The squeal of the tires cut off as they completed the turn and grip bit like a lion as the car rocketed down the road into the city.
| |||
| ====Chapter 2 Night ride====
| |||
| The force of the acceleration was unreal, Robert is forced back into his seat as Delta let loose the power of her car. Watching the world fly by, the music cranked up to high, on the train it was calm and kinda sad, here it was a rush, a trip of excitement and joy he couldn’t wipe the smile off his face as the speedo climbed. Delta was having just as much fun, Foot to the floor only letting off briefly to force the clutch in and slam the next gear into place before undoing her pedal movements and the roar of the engine started its pitch journey again. 3rd, 4th, then 5th. Everything was flying past them unable to catch them only thing that mattered right now was holding the steering wheel steady and keeping the empty road in front. 6th gear, 7th gear. The world is a blur of light as Robert’s senses are swallowed by speed and music. only thing keeping time is the beat, Everything seemed to vanish for Robert. All his worries and thoughts left behind in a storm of horsepower with no hope of catching back up as they charged towards the city. \\
| |||
| The roads from city limits were often wide and very empty especially at this time of night. The perfect place to let loose. No cameras, no law. Just tarmac and torque. \\ The car’s voice snapped Robert out of his daydreaming
| “Well.. Normal stuff I guess. “ he rubbed his shoulder trying to ease the aches. “You Probably herd it a thousand times before... I was a normal guy doing a normal job, i did a lot of programming and maintenance work on human augmentation. A lot of it was call outs so I often did alot of travelling around the city.”
| |||
| Robert flexed his artificial fingers as he looked out the window to the world outside, the beat of the music almost in tune with the street lamps flying past them. \\
| “One particular job seemed iffy but I took it anyway, turned out to be someone in deep with their company and not on good terms. Bots kicked down the door in the middle of my work looking for the guy. Freaked out as soon as he saw them taking me hostage. What an idiot, as if that would sway the bots.” Robert turned to Delta, anger creeping into his tone. \\
| “Blew us both apart. Literally. I was given a payout that wouldn’t last me a year and a flat ‘sorry’” He sighed, returning his gaze to the window. “So when offered my life back and a fresh start how could i say no?” \\
| Delta nodded not taking her eyes off the empty road. “Yea, I actually have heard that before...” \\
| There was only the beat of synthwave for a while before Delta spoke up again. “Guess your wondering about me. Huh?” \\
| Robert chuckled, “Honestly uh.. Delta. Your a surprise... No offence but I see a lot of augmenters around that have followed that trend of animal splicing. They get pretty weird, but well, you seem pretty normal.” \\
| Delta laughed out loud “weird? How so? I'm curious now” \\
| Robert gave a nervous laugh scratching his head, “Well they do things like lick themselves. Crawl around.... Say uwu a lot. I guess it's some people'
| Delta tried her best to control her laughter and drive at the same time, spreading to Robert as he laughed along with her for a bit. \\
| “Wow.. Just wow... I heard a lot of stories but honestly never went and saw it myself. Hearing it from you makes it all seem real.”
| |||
| Delta’s positive vibe was squashed as the road officially entered the city, passing by towers of glass and metal stretching high into the sky. Like ants they were passing below still giants, still but ever watching. Every building is plastered with colour meant to appeal and please, adds telling you to live longer for less, who to vote for, what’s bad what’s good, how things should be. They seem nice and inviting but make no mistake they are made for one reason only, to control.
| |||
| Crossing the invisible border of the city limits seemed to flick a switch. Soon enough the two of them started seeing other vehicles on the road and in the air. Delta straightened her course on the road before locking Remi back into gear waking up the engine with a wine of the turbochargers. \\ “Remi activate street mode, we don’t want another noise fine.” \\ The electronic voice responding instantly with a few beeps, The noise from the engine almost completely disappeared,
| |||
| Delta drove them down into what seemed to be the belly of the city. Ground floor were the giants started their assent into the sky above. Looking up felt like the towers were warping over you, ready to swallow everything whole in cold metal and blinding colour. \\ Robert got to see a familiar sight with regular suberbian streets. People walking around, shops, bars, alleys it was all here. The car slowed down to a snail’s pace compared to earlier, many onlookers giving Delta and Remi stares and call outs. \\ “Your quite popular it seems.” Robert teased a bit. She scoffed at the comment \\ “Being a women is so hard. But i’d Be lying if I didn’t enjoy the attention a little.” She shot Robert a cheeky smile that was returned by a raised eyebrow. \\
| The car took a right turn showing more of the city ahead. “I’ll take you around the suburbs a bit before getting to your new home. That alright?
| Robert nodded “perfectly fine with me. Would love to see more”
| |||
| They spent the next hour at least looking around this section of city. Delta showed Robert some of her favourite hang out points. Some good bars, Hotels and more importantly part spots, places to buy repair parts, weapons, gadgets and even some well known mod mechanics. It was definitely the same but different. Things seemed much bigger here. Bars were bigger, cars were fancier. And the people were far more unique |
