The World Beneath
Back to Cosmology
The Underdark is commonly thought to be underneath the material plane, however no matter how deep you dig you'll never reach the Underdark. While the barrier between the Underdark and the material plane is very thin, often entrances appear to be normal caves, ravines, or sinkholes. In rare cases where the barrier is especially thin if travelling underground and you trip or fall you may end up in the Underdark.
as the years have gone on the entrances to the Underdark have been sealed off and now only a few well known ones remain. Though these paths through the barrier were never removed, simply blocked rather rudimentary with magical seals or large amounts of rock and dirt. though even before then when the Jotunbrud walked freely it was the great Stein-Jotun or Stone Giants in common, the oldest of the Jotunbrud who where the gate guardians between the mortal realm and the Underdark.
In those early years the paths to the Underdark were grand but few in number. The Stone Giants crafted massive gates unlike any seen today that only open to a Giant's essence. but since then the paths have become smaller and numerous and closer. Though the old Gates still hold power and are a sight to behold.
The Underdark is an infinitely sprawling connection of tunnels and caves, underground seas, lakes, and rivers can also be found. There have been attempts at mapping the plane but have proven fruitless due to the complexity of locales. Most parts are shrouded in complete darkness while other areas are lit in dim light by glowing fungus or by the settlements and towns that are scattered few and far between.
Many races have made their home in the Underdark such as Derro, Drow1) what's left of the Duergar2), and Illithids.3) There are also many monstrous creatures such as Aboleths, Beholders, Cloakers, Kuo-Toa, and Driders.
Homes, Towns or other like locations that have not been pinpointed in a specific part of the map yet.

Duergar city of Nabundis
A crumbling city fallen to ruins. a combination of several things including infertility and poor leadership leave the species of Dwarves known as Druegar all but extinct. its theorised that the species will completely die out in the next few hundred years. only their long life spans keeping them around that long.

Myconid Forests

Narkul’s Banishment

The Shadow Realm, also known as the Far Realm, is a place deep within the already deep depths of the Underdark. This maddening realm is feared for its power to twist unfortunate visitors into gruesome monsters, and it was from here that aberrations came, slowly reaching into the Underdark proper and even breaching into Felwind.
Not even Oxtrad's war on the Underdark went as deep as Shadow Realm.
Narkul was banished to this realm when he posed a threat to Mor-Thir.
