Dwarf Independence
The Dwarven people have been around longer than most. They lay claim to the land long before flags were raise and borders were drawn. Most Dwarvern cities in Felwind fall into a special independence. Sudo classified as their own nation within Other nations. The rulers have little to no sway over a Dwarvern city and it will stay this way for evermore cause Dwarves are stubborn and sturdy and not likely to sway to the words of any other aside themselves.
Family
The Dwarven people have a strong family bond no matter where you may find them, and those who have shown great commitment may also find themselves being part of a Dwarven family, a great honour and true worth of found family.
The Deeper a Dwarf Goes
Dwarves in Felwind have a very unique life cycle based around their age and habitate
Young Dwarves or Dwarves who rarely dig deep are as general as you will find. Broad, Stoic, Magnificat well groomed bears, all the typical things most would expect from a Dwarf in any culture. Young Dwarves often stay close to the surface and still enjoy the light breeze, soft grass and warm sunshine of the surface. These Dwarves are often referred to as 'Hill Dwarves'. They are the most common seen Dwarves as they are the type of dwarves to leave the mines behind and see the world, Though they only make up a small fraction of the Dwarven Population. . Most Dwarves in Felwind are within their grand underground cities or deep in the mines they dig. These Mountain dwarves or ‘Stone-Skin’ are a true Dwarven people through and through.
Hill Dwarves are known to spread their mines wide. They do not dig as deep but cover far more area and are known to be more thorough. Often you will find Hill Dwarves with open cut mines. Wealth is shown with experience and family. Hill Dwarves often have very large families and a couple is almost always a couple for life. Its hard to find a female Hill dwarf who isn’t with child. Counteray to human customs the father Dwarf is offten the one staying home to look after newborns. And that role is eventually passed on to the eldest children when they are of suitable age to look after their younger brothers and sisters.
Hill dwarves also have a more varied work life with agriculture and animal care being just as prominent as mining.
As A Dwarf gets older they gain more experience, and with Experience comes pride and an urge to dig deeper. Dwarves who have matured begin to naturally adapt to their environment. Their flesh begins to infuse with the stone they dig becoming the Stone-Skin they are known for.
Some Dwarves will never stray too far from the surface. The earth is home to all Dwarves but they known better than most that stray too deep and you can loose yourself.
Those Dwarves who dare to test the limits of their muscles, tools and minds, The ones who do not fear the darkness bellow are known as Mountain Dwarves or Stone-Skin Dwarves
Mountain Dwarves are known to dig thier mines far deeper than most would think safe, The deeper you mine the grander your status. Wealth is shown with craftsmenship and a common norm if for a mountain dwarven couple to have no more than two children to which the skills of the parents will be passed to.
This create long lineages of Dwarven familys refined in a particular skill or trade such as smithing, mining etc. Mountain dwarves also love arena combat as sport and entertainment, all Dwarven cities have an arena of some sort but it thrives better with a higher population of mountain dwarves.
Despite the Dwarves love for the earth its not uncommon to see many a ‘Stone-Skin’ above ground, making trade in cities, taking a journey or even having been called to action to put down the shovel and pick up a blade.
Despite differences in culture and social norms there is little difference genetically between Hill and Mountain Dwarves. slight favouritism in terms of complexions, hair and eye colours but otherwise little else is different.
The differences lie mostly if not, all with the way the societies live, and even that isn't terribly different.
How Deep is Too Deep?
What Remains of the Druegarr
The Dwarvern people taken to the Underdaek long ago. The stories go that they rose up and rebelled against their Ilithid captors. But as generations went on the Druegarr died off due to complicated situations of poor social culture and infertility. Now hardly any remain. It is theorised the Druegar will all have died off by the year 12500.
What Makes a Dwarf?
when it comes to physical stature Dwarves are typically stocky, shorter than your average human but taller than any Halfling or Gnome. Typically very broad as well, built like forts with hands and feet proportionally larger than a human, Their arms and legs likewise typically much thicker and broader when compared to other humanoids.
The main draw for a Dwarf's appearance is their beard. a Dwarves' beard is a sign of status, health and social pride. There are many books about the upkeep of Dwarven beards as well as hair. you will very rarely find a dwarf without a mane of hair and a magnificent beard.
The beard of a dwarf tells others a lot, Normally a part of a design that is common withing a family. a style to represent their particular trade weather a miner, a gladiator or something else. and of course it is dressed up for special occasions and tunned down for less happy ones.
Dwarves recently married often wear red to symbolise love. while those expecting or recently have had a child wear green to show growth in their family. Blue is used for morning after the death of a family or friend, Yellow is used for celebration, normally the colour worn for a dwarven holiday, a birthday or other reasons fitting.
Dwarven Sub Species
The Dwarven people can vary in appearance like many other species but just like other species the differences are not so different to need separate categorisation of Sub-species. However, almost unique to Dwarves in Felwind is their natural ability to physically adapt to their surroundings.
